Armchair Traveler: Central Europe and the Foothills of the Alps

with John Sweeney

Armchair Traveler: Central Europe and the Foothills of the Alps

Thursday, August 12 • 12:30 PM via Zoom

Join John and Virginia Sweeney as they tour central Europe by train, bus, and private car, visiting historic sites dating back more than a millennium. Thorsten, a German born-family member, toured with them and shares his experience of living as a child during his teens under the Cold War. Visit the somber Holocaust museum along with the Dachau death camp and see some of the exhibits that depict the horror experienced by victims of the WWII inhumanity. See beautiful historic villages with their flower-draped half-timber buildings, and see a Germany and other European sites that have beauty that contrasts with what many Americans remember from newsreels of WWII and the Cold War.

Presenter: John Sweeney is a former John Deere dealer in Cambridge, MN. He and his wife, Virginia, traveled for more than 40 years until Virginia's Alzheimer's disease put an end to their travels. The Sweeneys will have been married 71 years in 2021. They raised five children and have eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. John still enjoys telling stories about their travels even at the age of 92!
